Launched today, www.cuil.com, the stealth search engine was co-founded in 2005 by two former Google engineers (Anna Patterson and Russel Power) and a former IBM top manager (Tom Costello). To compete with rivals Google [GOOG] or Powerset, the Menlo Park, Calif., based startup, has raised $33M in funding in the past two years.
While suffering from the launch-day blues, Cuil.com (pronounced “cool”) is impressive, a search engine that casts a wide net.
For example, a search for “marlins” brings up enough relevant Florida Marlins’ websites to satisfy – along with pictures, an eye-pleasing addition. But what is most impressive is “the Drilldown,” a window that appears in the corner of your search results and allows for a thematic “Explore by Category” search, which showed results for related categories like “Marlins players”, “Marlins Managers”, and “Jupiter Hammerheads,” the Marlins’ single-A affiliate. Unfortunately, this feature was pretty buggy, often leading to a “no results found” page, even though it was Cuil itself that recommended each search. If they get this working correctly, it could be a great feature.
The freshly launched search engine has 120 billion web pages indexed, three times the amount of any other search engine, and claims that its indexing costs are 1/10th those of Google’s, which should help bring in revenue for paid-indexing advertising.

I must say that as a web designer and online merchant I was anxious to see how my sites would do in the this new and “improved” search engine.
Wow! I’m impressed, my company is all over Cuil - by way of illegally copied pictures describing and promoting my competition! My site however is buried in the rankings - apparently whose only relevance is to be pilfered much like an unlocked car with the keys in the ignition. And in case I missed something that’s still stealing right? The guy who gets into that unlocked car and turns the key is still going to jail when the cops catch hime, right?
So other than than stealing from me, Cuil has also yet to return a correct result when searching for a specific website name, company name or person.
AND, they don’t even find themselves relevant in a search for the name of their company - I guess since have no graphics other than a black screen they had no need to list themselves since there is nothing to steal.
cuil is crap
New visual search engine already exists, it is only for kids))

This must be spam to promote cuil. Check closer and you will find that Cuil is not even close to the oft-quoted crappy Live Search, not to mention Google. Just try cuiling “Cuil.”
really amazing this website comparing to others
Cuil addressed itself as the largest search engine, is there any convincing evidence? I think it is more like part of its marketing campaign.
I like PLAHO Search Engine:

What do you think about this SE?
I like it also.
Especially Orange Plaho Search and very useful shortcuts.
While I think they could have chosen a better name, Cuil has a very unique look and is very functional.
Cuil was added to the select searches on the new compact meta / multi search site:
GooPlusPlus.com
Cuil is an Interesting approach in getting results. On my first try I got what your competitors did not get. Everything depends on the phrasing being short and to the point. It is only as good as the person and the question that is asked.
In any case I will be using it more often as I got good results an my First try.
I only heard about this on the Cranky Geeks show.
I will mention it to my friends and see what their experience will be like.
It’s too bad that Cuil was really pushed by the press (even myself) as a Google killer. If your search engine doesn’t beat Google within a week, you’re a failure. Same kind of thing going on for Wolfram Aplha right now.
As far as I know, Google wasn’t built in a day (but, yeah, all roads do seem to lead to it).

I found another niche search engine….
Gezzmo Search
