Motorola Announces Recycled-Bottle Phone

Motorola has unveiled the Moto W233 Renew, a mobile phone made of recycled bottles.

“Not only is the plastic housing of Renew made from plastics comprised of recycled water bottles and 100 percent recyclable, but it is also the world’s first carbon neutral phone,” says the company’s press release. Making the housing out of recycled water bottles reduces energy needed to produce the phone by 20 percent.

Motorola calls the Renew “the world’s first carbon neutral phone.” It was developed in alliance with Carbonfund.org, investing in renewable energy resources and reforestation to offset the carbon dioxide used for manufacturing, distributing and operating the phone. The box the Renew is packaged in was designed 22 percent smaller to reduce waste.

The phone has nine hours of talk time, which lessens the amount of recharging needed. The W233 Renew was unveiled last week at CES in Las Vegas.
