republicans and democrates animalsJohn McCain’s presidential campaign is sidestepping heat in what they now call a “boneheaded” statement by one of the campaign’s top economic policy advisors. The gaffe occurred September 16 while discussing McCain’s economic experiences on the Commerce Committee during his years in the Senate. Douglas Holtz-Eakin, the campaign’s senior domestic policy adviser, reached in his pocket and held up his BlackBerry cell phone.

“Telecommunications of the United States, the premiere innovation in the past 15 years, comes right through the Commerce Committee. So you’re looking at the miracle that John McCain helped create,” Holtz-Eakin quipped.

ebay fur baneBay [EBAY] has announced that it will ban the sale of dog and cat fur on their German-language sites in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, beginning Tuesday. This is in response to complaints from animal rights groups, who claim that vendors are selling fur and faux-fur products made from the pelts of dogs and cats.

eBay attracted the attention of animal rights groups when a cat-fur coat was posted for sale on their French site in February. Dog and cat fur, produced mainly in China and distributed primarily in the U.S. and Europe, is sold in unlabeled or mislabeled fur products. Millions of cats and dogs – many domestic – are killed for their fur each year.

iPhone Day 2.0: Frustrating Launch

iphone 3gWhile it’s not Madden Day, nor does it match the hysteria of the first iPhone release that we covered, today’s Apple [AAPL] iPhone 3G launch is not without its own quirky drama.

From professional line-waiters making a few hundred bucks by waiting to buy for someone else, to the publication of “iPhone line” restaurant lists, to and the Warholian fame of the first in line (the story arc of Dale Larson’s wait reads like pop-culture tragedy), iPhone Day 2.0 was already making for an entertaining Friday even before the stores opened.

San Francisco line-waiters began lining up at Apple’s downtown store early Thursday morning (see Mathieu’s pictures). Doors opened at 9:00am, and customers entered 30 at a time. As each group of customers entered, they were greeted by clapping employees, who were required to greet the customers with cheers. But maybe they should have been greeting them with hugs instead, as problems quickly developed.

ebayThe French court, Tribunal de Commerce of Paris, has ruled that auction site eBay Inc. (EBAY) must pay a fine of almost 40 million euros for allowing the auction of imposter merchandise of Louis Vuitton and its family of expensive brands.

The world’s largest online auctioneer was found guilty of knowingly auctioning off fake goods from Louis Vuitton (LVMHF) and its sister company Christian Dior Couture for violating the distribution network set up for four perfume brands: Christian Dior, Givenchy, Guerlain, and Kenzo.

  • HP’s Envious Comeback to the MacBook Air

voodoo envy 133Hewlett-Packard has responded to the MacBook Air with its own lightweight luxury laptop: the new Voodoo Envy 133, a piece that is a touch thinner, if slightly heavier, than its Apple counterpart.
While the MacBook Air is 0.76 inches thick and weighs in at 3.00 pounds, HP’s razor creation is 0.70 inches thick and 3.40 pounds, VentureBeat explained Tuesday.

hp touchsmart computerAmong 17 new products unveiled by Hewlett-Packard on Tuesday was the TouchSmart All-in-One PC, the company’s newest computer featuring touch-screen technology.
The TouchScreen responds to fingertip movement much like Apple’s iPhone, and it is built around photo, music, and gaming functions, though it still has normal PC capabilities.
The social and interactive qualities of the new computer will help market it to a young generation of iPhone lovers and social networking users, but its price will appeal to all.
Starting at $1,299, the TouchSmart is very competitive with its rivals, but being the first PC with touch-screen technology sets it apart, for better or worse.
Some are critical about the idea itself, saying that a touch-screen PC appeals to a niche market that may not fully embrace the idea, especially considering the ever-advancing smartphone technology.
Also, the TouchSmart runs exclusively on Microsoft’s Vista operating system, with no plans to create versions that can run on other systems such as Linux.
The most sensational device on the market with similar technology is Apple’s iPhone, but HP has been developing touch-screen technology for almost 25 years.
Still, the popularity of the iPhone can signal either a great future for the TouchSmart, or an extremely dismal one.
It is telling that Apple has not created a similar computer after the high sales of the iPhone, but their neglect of such a user-friendly PC market might be just the thing that drives the TouchSmart to sell well.
The TouchSmart will go on sale in 17 countries starting July 13th, including the United States, Britain, Japan, China, and India.
Just like the iPhone, if the TouchSmart sells well initially, look for it to be around for a while. If not, it might be too radical an idea for a PC.
Yahoo! is teaming up with McAfee Inc. to alert its search engine users of potentially harmful Web sites that come up in search results.

McAfee Inc. identifies Web sites that are dangerous to users when they add spyware or adware or other infections through downloads, and Yahoo will place a red exclamation mark next to such sites in its search results page.

The safety partnership comes amidst recent Web site corruptions that place viruses on commonly searched sites in order to trick users into visiting and, consequently, being infected on malicious sites.

"Yahoo users have clearly told us that among the most important concerns for them are all these lurking threats on the Internet," said Priyank Garg, director of product management for Yahoo’s search division.

The Web sites that McAfee deems as the most dangerous simply will not come up in search results. These are the sites that attempt to take advantage of web browser flaws such as those in Safari, FireFox, and older editions of Internet Explorer.

    The deal benefits both companies.

Yahoo is looking to rebound after rejecting Microsoft’s improved $47.5 billion bid, a move that Yahoo says was never official and one that caused the company’s stock to fall 15%.

McAfee will be able to expose its software to all of Yahoo’s search engine users, which are second in number behind Google, and entice them to upgrade to more premium versions.

It will also enable the Web security company to analyze search data and find more flaws that they can use to improve their software.

While making its search engine safer for users, many see the move as a means to justify the rejection of a high bid and fortify its stance against Microsoft in case more negotiations take place.

paypal illustrationPayPal will soon block people using old Web browsers from using their site in order to curb phishing scams.

The eBay company says that too many people are still using Web browsers over a decade old, and that such browsers do not come with filters that prevent users from accessing phishing Web sites.

These sites act as legitimate Web sites, most commonly as online banks and other sites that require personal information, in order to trick the user into entering, then stealing, such information.

Though the usual method of “recruiting” unsuspecting users is via email, recently hackers have targeted Google searches and placed popular Web sites in their results, directing unsuspecting users to fraudulent sites.

Users of Internet Explorer (IE) 3 and IE 4, released in 1996 and 1997, respectively, cannot be protected from Web sites that aim to collect personal information.

In a paper released by PayPal at the RSA Security Conference in San Francisco earlier this month, they said "In our view, letting users view the PayPal site on one of these browsers is equal to a car manufacturer allowing drivers to buy one of their vehicles without seatbelts."

Apple’s default Web browser Safari is also vulnerable to phishing sites, as it does not have a filter to block them either.

PayPal will be warning users of their old Web browser when they visit the site, hopefully prodding them to update it. Eventually they will be blocked from using the Web site all together.

PayPal is a popular target for phishing scams because it allows users to transfer money directly to and from their bank accounts. Because of its use of sensitive information, the company is looking to fortify itself and its users from data theft.

Though no site can completely prevent one from being scammed, PayPal is taking measures to reduce the risk.

myspace logoOn Friday, April 4, 2008 Myspace announced a new project called Myspace Music, a possible competition to Apple’s iTunes.

The project is in collaboration with three of the top four music firms, including Universal Music, Sony BMG Music and Warner Music Group. The music label EMI did not take part in the partnership.

With Myspace Music, users will be able to get a “360 music experience.” The joint venture includes ad-supported audio and video streaming, enabling users to listen and watch music videos for free.

The money-making for the website and the music companies comes via e-commerce and downloads.

Users will pay a fee to download DRM-free (Digital Rights Management) music. It is seen as a possible competitor to the iTunes Music Store, which dominates the online music market.

"This gives a great new lease of life for the download market," said Thomas Hesse, Sony BMG president of global digital business.

Myspace Music will sell an array of merchandise, including artist merchandise, ring tones, and concert tickets. Users will also be able to get access to this platform through a mobile storefront backed by News Corporation’s Jamba mobile company (Myspace is owned by News Corps.).

The project will be integrated across the three primary Myspace platforms for music—the Myspace Music homepage, artist homepages, and user homepages. With 30 million unique visitors every month and over 5 million artists on the site, Myspace Music is combining the most popular music community with a vast catalogue of music.

With the introduction of e-commerce and ad-supported music streaming, combined with competition with iTunes, Myspace Music is finally letting music companies take advantage of the millions of people exposed to their artists on the internet.
